Gavin Moodie is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Leadership, Higher, and Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, and an honorary fellow of the University of Oxford Centre for Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance. With over 35 years of experience in Australian universities, primarily in administrative roles, he brings extensive practical knowledge to his academic work.
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of New England (2006), an LLB from the University of Melbourne (1981), and a BA (Hons) from the same institution (1973). He also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from RMIT (2011).
Moodie's research focuses on the complex relationships between vocational and higher education systems, with particular emphasis on educational pathways, articulation arrangements, and the implications of marketization on tertiary education. His work examines how students navigate between different sectors of education, how institutions can better serve diverse student populations, and how policy frameworks shape educational opportunities. Through his comparative international approach, he has illuminated both common challenges and distinctive national approaches to structuring tertiary education.
His publications reveal a consistent interest in how educational systems can be structured to promote greater equity and social justice, particularly examining how vocational qualifications relate to higher education pathways and how these relationships affect students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. His two major books provide comprehensive analyses of the historical evolution of universities in the face of technological change and the structural relationships between vocational and higher education systems internationally.
