Hicks specializes in comparative politics and political economy of industrialized democracies, with three core research strands: (1) politics of austerity and fiscal policy, (2) politics of economic inequality, and (3) political economy and media. His work employs diverse methodologies including survey experiments, content analysis, and comparative case studies, often examining how economic conditions shape political behavior and policy preferences across advanced democracies.
His publication record features articles in top journals including American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, and British Journal of Political Science. Hicks' recent work analyzes media representations of economic inequality, public responses to austerity rhetoric, and pandemic-era shifts in healthcare policy preferences, demonstrating consistent focus on the intersection of economic conditions, political institutions, and public opinion.
Hicks actively supervises PhD students including Liam Kneafsey (Trinity College Dublin) and Philipp Schroeder (UCL), and teaches core undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Politics for Philosophy, Politics and Economics students. As Director of Education since 2022, he leads curriculum development and quality assurance for the department's educational programs.
