Lucy Barnes is a Professor in Comparative Politics at the Department of Political Science, University College London (UCL). She joined UCL in 2016 from the University of Kent, where she was a Lecturer in Quantitative Politics. Her academic background includes a PhD and AM in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University, and a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford. She has held research fellowships at Trinity College Dublin and Nuffield College Oxford, remaining an Associate Member at the latter.
Her research focuses on the politics of economic policymaking in Western democracies, particularly the UK. Key projects include the UKRI-funded 'Mental Models in Political Economy,' exploring public understanding of economic systems, and studies on fiscal policy, taxation, inequality, and the interface between political science and political philosophy. She also examines the politics of austerity, public preferences for redistribution, and the role of media in shaping fiscal attitudes.
Teaching and supervision interests include PhD proposals on economic policy preferences and institutions, with a focus on complementing her research projects. Grants and funding include leadership of the UKRI project. Professional activities involve podcast appearances (e.g., UCL Uncovering Politics) and contributions to journals like the American Journal of Political Science and British Journal of Political Science.
Her work bridges empirical political science with normative debates, emphasizing how public perceptions of economic issues influence policy outcomes. Recent trends in her publications highlight experimental methods to assess policy framing effects and cross-national analyses of socioeconomic inequalities.
