Jonathan Heathcote is a Monetary Advisor and Deputy Director in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He previously held academic roles including Assistant/Associate Professor at Georgetown University, and has taught at institutions such as the Stockholm School of Economics and NYU’s Stern School of Business. His research focuses on macroeconomics, income inequality, fiscal policy, and optimal taxation. He earned a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Keble College, Oxford University (1993) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania (1998).
Key research interests include the dynamics of economic inequality, the distributional effects of taxation and fiscal policy, and the interplay between macroeconomic and financial systems. Recent work addresses pandemic policy trade-offs, corporate sector stability, and intergenerational redistribution during economic crises. He co-edits the Review of Economic Dynamics and is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research.
Publications span prestigious journals like the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Review of Economic Studies, with a focus on empirical and theoretical analyses of inequality, tax systems, and macroeconomic stability.
