Tim Hales is a Professor of Anaesthesia and Neuroscience at the University of Dundee, affiliated with the School of Medicine. He holds dual roles as the non-clinical head of the Division of Neuroscience and Associate Dean for Research-Led Teaching. Hales earned a BSc (Hons) in Physiology from King’s College London (1986) and a PhD from the University of Dundee (1990). His postdoctoral training was at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), followed by roles at George Washington University (GWU), where he became a tenured Professor and Director of Research in Anesthesiology.
- Education:
- BSc (Hons) Physiology, King’s College London, 1986
- PhD, University of Dundee, 1990
His research focuses on the mechanisms of anaesthetics and opioids, ion channel modulation, and their roles in cancer and pain management. Notably, his work identified voltage-activated Na+ channels as potential anticancer targets. Hales leads the Consortium Against Pain InEquality (CAPE), investigating childhood adversity’s impact on chronic pain.
Key awards include the Dundee Difference Award (2024), Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2012), and a Letter of Commendation for PPIE (2024). His research is funded by grants from Tenovus Scotland, NIH (USA), and UK institutions. He has supervised 11 students and contributed to projects like the ENIGMA-Chronic Pain initiative and the Alleviate Pain Research Hub.
Hales’ work aligns with UN SDGs related to Good Health and Well-being. His lab explores molecular targets for safer anaesthetics and analgesics, emphasizing translational research and clinical impact.
