Dr. Tianjia (Tina) Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she leads the Environmental Modeling, oBservations, and Remote Sensing (EMBRS) Lab. She holds a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University (2022) and a BA in Environmental Science from Columbia University (2017). Prior to UBC, she held a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship at UC Irvine (2022–2024).
Her research focuses on the intersection of atmospheric science, public health, and geography. Key themes include modern human-fire relationships, wildfire dynamics, and the impacts of extreme climate events on planetary health. The EMBRS Lab employs advanced techniques like remote sensing, GIS, data science, and atmospheric modeling to study fire progression, smoke dispersion, and climate mitigation strategies across North America, India, and Equatorial Asia.
Notable projects include developing the GOES-Observed Fire Event Representation (GOFER) product for tracking wildfire progression hourly through satellite data, and analyzing the health implications of agricultural burning in India. Dr. Liu collaborates broadly within physical and human geography, and with interdisciplinary teams across environmental policy and climate justice.
Her work has been featured in Nature Communications, Science Advances, and Earth System Science Data. Awards include the prestigious NOAA postdoctoral fellowship and recognition for contributions to wildfire-air quality research.
