Mark de Jong is a Researcher in the Department of Geography at King's College London, affiliated with the King's Earth Observation and Wildfire (NCEO) research group and the Earth and Environmental Dynamics research group. He holds roles in the Earth Observation and Environmental Sensing (EOES) Hub and the King's Climate Research Hub. His work focuses on wildfire dynamics, remote sensing applications, and climate change impacts.
Education:
- BSc Environmental Science (First Class Honours) from University of Leeds (2008)
- MSc Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Management (Distinction) from King's College London (2010)
- PhD in Wildfire Incidence and Weather Influences (2019)
Research Interests: Wildfire fire danger assessment, land surface temperature monitoring, atmospheric pollution analysis, and the application of satellite remote sensing for environmental studies. His PhD explored FWI System calibration and fire-emissions forecasting at global scales.
Awards:
- Sally McGill Memorial Prize (2008)
- Best Physical Geography Thesis Prize (2010)
Grants/Experience: NERC-funded PhD studentship (2013–2019). Previously worked at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (air quality monitoring) and King's Environmental Research Group (air quality modeling).
