Tianjia (Tina) Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia (UBC), leading the EMBRS Lab. She is also a Faculty Associate at UBC's Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES). Her research focuses on wildfires, air quality, and climate interactions using remote sensing, GIS, and atmospheric modeling. She holds a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard (2022) and a BA in Environmental Science from Columbia (2017), with postdoctoral work at UC Irvine (2022-2024).
Key research themes include modern human-fire relationships, fire spread modeling with geostationary satellites, and quantifying wildfire impacts on public health. She develops tools like the SMRT-Flames app for smoke risk analysis and collaborates on interdisciplinary studies across India, Equatorial Asia, and North America.
Recent work includes presentations at AGU 2024 and Scripps Institution on wildfire growth modeling, and publications on prescribed burning effects and smoke sensor placement for environmental justice. Her lab emphasizes open science and data-driven frameworks for wildfire management.
