PD Dr. Thomas Wagner serves as Senior Academic Councillor at the University of Wuppertal's Faculty of Protestant Theology, specializing in Old Testament studies with venia legendi. His research integrates theological, archaeological, and interdisciplinary approaches to ancient texts, with office hours held Mondays 2-3 p.m. at Gaußstraße 20, Wuppertal.
His academic journey includes:
- Born 1971 in Solingen
- Protestant Theology studies at Wuppertal and Bonn (1993-1999)
- Doctorate (2004) on "God's Rule: Analysis of Isaiah 6:1-9:6"
- Habilitation (2011) with venia legendi for Old Testament
Wagner's research centers on epistemological, iconographic, and anthropological dimensions of the Old Testament, particularly prophecy and spatial concepts in Persian-period Hebrew writings. His work bridges biblical scholarship with cognitive science and ancient Near Eastern studies, examining how ancient communities conceptualized knowledge, suffering, and divine-human interaction through wisdom literature and prophetic traditions.
Recent publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary trajectory, connecting epistemology with prophecy (2024), suffering in Job (2023), and spatial theory in Hebrew texts (2023). His editorial projects on antisemitism in biblical scholarship (2025) and ancient epistemologies (2024) demonstrate critical engagement with contemporary methodological debates while maintaining deep roots in textual analysis.
Academic service includes Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching (2016), Acting Professor roles at Frankfurt and Kiel universities, and EABS Committee membership since 2020 (Treasurer from 2021). His international collaborations span Lund University, Claremont School of Theology, and Stockholm's Teologiska Högskolan.
