Thomas A. Tweed is the Harold and Martha Welch Professor of American Studies and Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. He holds dual appointments in the Department of American Studies and the History Department, with affiliations to the Institute of Latino Studies, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion, and Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. His research focuses on religion's role in social justice, transnational religious movements, and the intersections of religion with migration, architecture, and environment. He earned his graduate degrees from Harvard and Stanford Universities.

Research Interests
Tweed explores how religion sanctions inequity or promotes justice, with a particular focus on Buddhism and Catholicism. His work bridges transnational studies, examining religion in the Pacific World and the Americas. Notable interests include religious landscapes, diasporic communities, and the role of architecture in religious expression. For instance, his book Our Lady of the Exile analyzes a Cuban Catholic shrine in Miami, while America’s Church examines the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
