Thomas Stuecken is a Researcher and Director of the joint Michigan State University-Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and Diamond Technologies within the College of Engineering's Mechanical Engineering department. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Technical University Dresden, Germany (1996) and an M.Sc. in Physics from the same institution (1992). His research focuses on thin film coating technologies, particularly diamond and diamond-like carbon materials, plasma deposition processes, and their applications in energy efficiency, transportation safety, biomedical fields, and power electronics.
Notable awards include the Top Reviewer Award (2009) and recognition in the Fraunhofer Society's Annual Report (2005). His work spans collaborations with institutions like LBNL, Berkeley, and involves advancing technologies for industrial challenges such as friction reduction, corrosion resistance, and electrochemical sensing. His publications emphasize innovations in diamond-based electronics, doping techniques, and plasma-assisted material synthesis.
Stuecken's professional journey includes roles at Charted Semiconductor Manufacturing (Singapore) and leadership of Fraunhofer USA’s Thin Film Coatings Laboratory. He leads a research team addressing interdisciplinary challenges at the MSU-Fraunhofer Center, bridging academic and industrial applications of advanced materials.
