Thomas Schultz is a Senior Lecturer Emeritus at the Stanford School of Music, specializing in piano performance. He holds a BMus with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin (1974), an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (1977), and a DMA from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1986). His studies were under renowned mentors John Perry and Leonard Stein.
His research and performance focus on classical and contemporary piano repertoire, with notable collaborations with composers such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Elliott Carter. Schultz has performed globally, including solo recitals in Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, and Vienna, and as a soloist at venues like Alice Tully Hall (NYC) and the Colorado Music Festival. He is also active in chamber music, working with ensembles like the St. Lawrence String Quartet and Robert Craft’s 20th Century Classics Ensemble.
His discography includes recordings on labels such as New World and Mode, featuring works by contemporary composers. Schultz has dedicated performances and lectures to the music of John Cage, Frederic Rzewski, and Hyo-shin Na.
