Dr. Thomas Mills is a Senior Lecturer in Diplomatic and International History and Head of the Department of History at Lancaster University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He serves as Chair of the Transatlantic Studies Association and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research focuses on Anglo-American diplomatic and economic relations, particularly in Latin America, with a special interest in the 20th-century political and economic dynamics between Britain and the U.S. He has authored key works such as Post-War Planning on the Periphery (2012) and edited Britain and the Growth of US Hegemony in Twentieth-Century Latin America (2020).
His current research explores British and American trade bodies' roles in post-WWII trade reconstruction and the 'free trade tradition' from 1846–1948. He collaborates with institutions like Canning House and the British Foreign Policy Group. Teaching includes courses on international order and Britain's role as a global power since 1914. He holds fellowships from the Higher Education Academy and Canning House, and chairs the Transatlantic Studies Association.
Awards include Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Higher Education Academy. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy, including post-Brexit UK-Latin America engagement. He advises doctoral students on 20th-century British and U.S. foreign policy and co-leads the Centre for War and Diplomacy.
