Alex Goodall is a Senior Lecturer in International History at University College London (UCL), specializing in US history and foreign policy. His research focuses on political repression in 20th-century America, the rise of American global power, and interventions in Central America and the Caribbean. He is currently on research leave for the 2024/25 academic year.
Goodall holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2006). His major publications include Loyalty and Liberty: American Countersubversion from World War One to the McCarthy Era (2013) and co-authored The Open Door Era: United States Foreign Policy in the Twentieth Century (2017). He supervises doctoral students in early- to mid-20th century US history and foreign policy.
His research interests include anticommunism, Cold War dynamics, US-Latin America relations, and the historical roots of American imperialism. Recent work explores white supremacy in Anglo-American colonial contexts and transnational dimensions of US history.
Alex serves as Convenor of the North American seminar series at the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His academic contributions bridge diplomatic history, political repression studies, and transnational frameworks.
