Dr David Sim is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at University College London (UCL). He specializes in 19th-century US history, focusing on politics, foreign relations, imperialism, and cultural studies. Holding a DPhil from the University of Oxford, he joined UCL in 2012. His research explores transnational and imperial approaches to US history, including studies on Irish nationalism's intersection with US foreign policy and material histories of abolition and empire.
He currently leads two major projects: a material history of the William Seward family and a co-edited volume, To See A World: Microhistories of the Global United States. Teaching responsibilities include modules on the Civil War era and US global relations from 1776–1900.
Academic service roles include Director of Undergraduate Teaching, convenor of the US History graduate workshop, and committee memberships at UCL. He also chairs the Commonwealth Fund Committee and oversees the IHR North American History seminar series.
David’s work bridges microhistories with broader geopolitical themes, emphasizing transnational networks and material culture. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with diplomatic, cultural, and economic history.
