Dr Neil Tarrant is a historian specializing in the intellectual and cultural history of sixteenth-century Italy, focusing on science, medicine, and religion. He is affiliated with the History Department at University College London (UCL), having previously held positions at institutions such as Imperial College London, the University of York, and the University of Leeds. His research explores intersections between science, religion, and censorship in early modern Europe, with particular attention to the Roman Inquisition and Italian intellectual networks.
Education: DPhil in Intellectual History from the University of Sussex (2010), Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Research Interests: Dr Tarrant’s work examines the history of science and medicine in early modern Italy, the role of religious institutions in shaping scientific inquiry, and the cultural contexts of censorship. His publications analyze figures like Girolamo Cardano, Robert Bellarmine, and Giambattista Della Porta, as well as topics such as alchemy, astrology, and the intellectual legacies of the Roman Inquisition.
Teaching: Dr Tarrant teaches modules including 'Early Modern Europe,' 'Gender and Knowledge in Early Modern Europe,' and 'Gender, Sex and Bodies in Early Modern England' at UCL.
External Roles: Co-convenor of the IHR ‘Italy 1200-1700’ seminar and co-managing editor of Lias: Journal of Early Modern Intellectual Culture and its Sources.
