Dr. Alex Ferguson is a Teaching Professor in 20th Century US History at the University of Sheffield’s School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Southampton. His research focuses on U.S. foreign relations during the Cold War, particularly Franco-American alliances in Vietnam, the role of Ngo Dinh Diem, and Cold War-era diplomatic dynamics. His work emphasizes everyday interactions shaping international alliances and the historiography of postcolonial conflicts.
Education: BA (Southampton), MA (Southampton), PhD (Southampton).
Research interests include Cold War alliances, U.S. foreign policy in Indochina, and the Vietnam War’s historiography. His current book project, Operation Eggshell, examines Franco-American relations in Saigon during the early 1950s, highlighting grassroots interactions. A new project, The Analogous Alliance, explores US-Vietnamese leader Ngo Dinh Diem through historical analogies. Recent publications include analyses of U.S. involvement in Diem’s rise and embassy strategies during the Dien Bien Phu crisis.
Research has been supported by grants from the Historians of the Twentieth Century United States, the Institute of Historical Research, and others. Teaching includes courses on Cold War history, U.S. foreign relations, and rights in American history.
Professional activities include memberships in the Historians of the Twentieth Century United States, British Association of American Studies, and British International History Group.
