Elisabeth Piller is Assistant Professor of Transatlantic and North American History at the Department of History, University of Freiburg. She serves as Senior Fellow in the FRIAS Project Group “Post-war Periods” (October 2024 – September 2025) and leads research on U.S. humanitarian aid and its geopolitical implications in the 20th century.

- BA (2008) in History and Religious Studies
Her research focuses on American foreign policy, transatlantic relations since the 19th century, cultural diplomacy, and the evolution of modern humanitarianism. Key projects include analyzing post-WWII U.S. aid as a catalyst for global hegemony and revisiting WWI blockades' role in shaping humanitarian infrastructure.
Recent publications highlight her expertise in blockades, humanitarian corridors, and postwar reconstruction. She has co-edited volumes on The Blockade in the Era of the World Wars (2024) and Humanitarianism and the Greater War (2023). Awards include the Transatlantic Studies Association-Cambridge University Press Book Prize (2022) and Friedrich-Ebert-Preis (2020).
