Thomas Mayr-Harting is a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe's Natolin Campus, holding positions in both the European Interdisciplinary Studies Department and the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Department. As of 2024, he served as the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office’s Special Representative for the Transdniestrian Settlement Process (2020–2024). Previously, he held senior diplomatic roles, including Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia at the European External Action Service (2015–2019), Head of the EU Delegation to the UN in New York (2011–2015), and Austria’s Permanent Representative to the UN (2008–2011). He represented Austria on the UN Security Council in 2009–2010.
His career spans over four decades in international diplomacy, including roles at the Austrian Mission to the EU in Brussels, the Austrian Embassy in Moscow, and as Political Director of Austria’s Foreign Ministry (2003–2008). He served as Austria’s Ambassador to Belgium and NATO Head from 1999–2003.
Mayr-Harting’s expertise lies in multilateral diplomacy, conflict resolution, and EU external relations. His educational background includes a law degree from the University of Vienna, a diploma from the College of Europe (Karl Renner Promotion), and the Hague Academy of International Law (1978).
