Andrew Cottey

Andrew Cottey is a Professor and EU Jean Monnet Chair in European Political Integration at the Department of Government and Politics, University College Cork (UCC), where he has been since 1999. He served as Head of the Department from 2013 to 2018. His research focuses on international relations, international security, and global governance, with particular expertise in European security institutions (NATO, EU, OSCE), civil-military relations, defense diplomacy, and Chinese foreign policy.

Research Interests: Dr. Cottey’s work spans European security architecture, regional cooperation, peacekeeping, and Sino-European relations. He has authored/co-authored influential books such as Security in 21st Century Europe (2013) and Understanding Chinese Politics (2012), and contributed to journals like Contemporary Security Policy and International Affairs. His research often bridges theoretical analysis with policy-relevant insights on global security challenges.
