Roland KOBIA is a Visiting Professor at the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Department of the College of Europe in Bruges. He currently serves as the European Union Ambassador to Ethiopia (2021-2024) and has held prominent diplomatic roles including EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan (2017-2021), EU Ambassador to Myanmar/Burma (2013-2017), and EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan (2009-2013). He was elected President of the EU Ambassadors' Office and is part of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Mediation Team. Previously, he served in key positions such as Deputy Head of Mission in the DRC (2000-2003), Head of Regional Political Affairs in Kenya (2003-2006), and as an EU negotiator during accession talks and at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Education includes a Master in European Politics from the College of Europe, a Master in International Nuclear Law from the University of Montpellier 1, and a Law degree from Université catholique de Louvain. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Montpellier 1 and lecturer at other institutions. His research focuses on international diplomacy, conflict resolution, and EU foreign policy, with ongoing academic publications in international journals.
Roland KOBIA has been shortlisted by the UN Secretary-General for the role of UN Special Envoy for Myanmar. His career reflects deep engagement with geopolitical challenges in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, combined with academic contributions to policy analysis and mediation strategies.
