Thomas H. Johnson is a Research Professor in the National Security Affairs Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he also serves as Director of the Program for Culture & Conflict Studies. His work focuses on coordinating research activities on the peoples, societies, politics and conflicts of Central and South Asia. Professor Johnson has taught courses on Afghanistan, Central and South Asian crises, and historical insurgencies and counterinsurgencies at NPS, as well as previously at the University of Southern California and the Foreign Service Institute.
With over three decades of research experience focused on Afghanistan and South Asia, Johnson's expertise spans insurgency, counterinsurgency, and Taliban studies. His research interests include the cultural dimensions of conflict, political legitimacy in fragile states, electoral processes in conflict zones, and narrative analysis of insurgent groups. Johnson has developed specialized knowledge in analyzing Taliban narratives, night letters, and propaganda mechanisms, examining how stories and messages shape the Afghanistan conflict.
