Dr. Robert Johnson is a Senior Research Fellow at Pembroke College, University of Oxford, and Director of the Changing Character of War (CCW) Centre. His research focuses on the history of war, strategic decision-making, and conflicts in South West and Central Asia. He specializes in the First World War, inter-war years, and modern conflicts, with a thematic emphasis on strategy, intelligence, and military thought.
As Director of CCW, he leads interdisciplinary studies on war's evolving nature, including technology's impact, state relationships, and global connectivity. The Centre engages scholars, military organizations, and governments in collaborative projects. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary challenges, particularly in Asia and Middle Eastern contexts.
Johnson’s teaching interests include military strategy, future war conceptions, and electronic warfare. He currently supervises DPhil students Julia Carver (Politics) and Matt Laird (Politics). His publications span over three decades, addressing topics like Afghanistan’s modern history, NATO dynamics, and the Russian-Ukraine conflict.
Johnson’s academic contributions include the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and the CCW Centre’s strategic dialogues. He is active in media engagements, including BBC Radio and public lectures.
