Thomas Elmqvist is a Professor of Natural Resource Management at Stockholm University, affiliated with the Stockholm Resilience Centre. He concurrently serves as Co-director of the Environment Program at EASAC (part-time). His roles include Adjunct Professorships at Cornell University (USA) and the University of Tokyo (Japan), alongside Fellowships at the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry and the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Studies (South Africa).
His research focuses on natural disturbances, ecosystem dynamics, urbanization impacts on biodiversity, and resilience components, particularly the role of social institutions. Key contributions include analyzing urbanization in the Anthropocene, land-use change effects, and sustainability strategies. His work bridges ecological science with policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Elmqvist has received prestigious awards, including the Ecological Society of America’s Best Paper in Sustainability Science (2019, 2023) and recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in multiple years. His 2014 paper on knowledge integration in ecosystem governance remains highly cited (677+). His publications span resilience theory, urban sustainability, and biodiversity conservation.
He has led global assessments, such as the 2013 Springer volume on Urbanization, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Services, which has been downloaded over 1.89 million times. His research also addresses environmental policy, response diversity, and climate adaptation strategies in urban contexts.
