Erik Andersson is a Professor in Environmental Sustainability Science at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria). He holds a PhD in Natural Resources Management from Stockholm University (2007) and serves as an Extraordinary Professor at North-West University, South Africa (2022–2024). His research focuses on socio-ecological systems, urban sustainability, ecosystem services, and resilience, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 49) and €6M in competitive funding since 2010.
Andersson leads interdisciplinary teams and supervises multiple PhD students and postdocs. He is active in transdisciplinary collaborations with civic and governmental organizations, emphasizing pathways to sustainable urban development. Awards include the BiodivERsA Prize (2021) and Ecological Society of America’s Sustainability Science Award (2023). He serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief of Ambio and contributes to global initiatives like the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Key research themes include urban green infrastructure, climate adaptation, and equity in conservation.
Recent projects include the MUST initiative (Multispecies Urban Transitions) and GREEN TALENT (2025–2029), exploring nature-based solutions and socio-ecological governance. His work bridges academic, policy, and community spheres, emphasizing actionable knowledge for sustainability transitions.
