Jussi T. Eronen is a Professor of Socio-ecological systems and Vice-Dean of Societal Interaction at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. He leads the Past Present Sustainability Research Unit (PAES) and is affiliated with multiple research programs including Diversity in Society and Life (DIVSOL), Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), and BIOS. His work spans across environmental sciences, ecology, and sustainability science with strong interdisciplinary connections.
Dr. Eronen's research focuses on transdisciplinary studies of long-term socio-ecological systems and natural resource use. His work explores three main research fronts: (1) How biotic interactions have been changed by human influence across temporal scales from millennia to centuries; (2) Long-term socio-ecological analysis of Northern Fennoscandia focusing on livelihoods like reindeer herding; and (3) Historically built path-dependencies affecting current policies in Finland. His approach integrates natural sciences with interdisciplinary post-docs and collaborations, aiming to evaluate potential future pathways for society.
Eronen's publication record shows consistent scholarly output since 2002, with notable increases in recent years. His research demonstrates strong thematic continuity in socio-ecological systems while expanding into new areas like green transition governance, cultural heritage studies, and climate adaptation pathways. The interdisciplinary nature of his work is evident in publications spanning environmental science, ecology, anthropology, and policy studies, reflecting his commitment to transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges.
As an active academic leader, Eronen supervises doctoral students in both the Doctoral Programme in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Geosciences. He has secured multiple research projects, including the University Profiling funding for DIVSOL and the InterEarth RESET project, demonstrating strong grant acquisition capabilities. His work extends beyond traditional academic boundaries through public engagement, policy contributions, and media appearances discussing sustainability issues.
Dr. Eronen leads the Past Present Sustainability Research Unit (PAES), which brings together researchers from diverse disciplines to examine socio-ecological systems from historical, contemporary, and future perspectives. The unit's work connects with broader initiatives at the University of Helsinki, particularly through the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), where Eronen contributes to interdisciplinary sustainability research. His affiliation with BIOS further extends his collaborative network across Finnish environmental research institutions.
