Thomas Dierks is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurophysiology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He holds leadership roles as Director of Teaching and Research at Universitäre Psychiatrische Dienste (UPD) Bern and Head of the Division of Clinical Research Support at the University Hospital of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. His research focuses on neuroimaging techniques (e.g., MRI, EEG) to study mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia and dementia. He has authored over 200 publications and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging. His work includes translational approaches to improve diagnosis and therapy for patients with mental disorders.
Education: MD from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany). Career highlights include appointments as Research Scientist at the University Hospital of Psychiatry Würzburg (1985) and Head of the Brain-Mapping Laboratory in Frankfurt (1993). Full professorship at the University of Bern (1999).
Research interests span the pathophysiology of mental disorders, neuroimaging applications, and clinical neuroscience. His group investigates brain networks in conditions like dementia with Lewy bodies and schizophrenia, emphasizing sex differences and connectivity patterns. Collaborations include international societies and institutions like Karolinska Institute.
Key contributions include studies on grey matter networks in dementia, functional connectivity alterations in Alzheimer’s, and translational approaches to mental disorder modeling. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, aiming to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
