Thomas D. Nolin is an Associate Professor and tenured Associate Dean for Research & Sponsored Programs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Pharmacy & Therapeutics and the Department of Medicine Renal-Electrolyte Division. Dr. Nolin’s research focuses on the impact of kidney disease and renal replacement therapy (RRT) on drug pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism, and transport pathways. He directs the Small Molecule Biomarker Core mass spectrometry facility and leads interdisciplinary collaborations in clinical-translational studies. NIH-funded, he has authored over 180 manuscripts and book chapters, with notable contributions to EXTRIP Workgroup guidelines on extracorporeal treatments for poisoning.
Education: PharmD and PhD (Graduate Program Affiliation: Clinical Pharmaceutical Scientist Program, University of Pittsburgh). Research emphasizes kidney disease’s effects on nonrenal metabolism, drug eligibility/dosing strategies, and functional expression of hepatic enzymes/transporters. Awards include Fellowships in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and American Society of Nephrology.
Grants/Advising: NIH-funded investigator with expertise in drug development for kidney patients. Collaborates on FDA guidelines for CKD drug dosing. Active in EXTRIP Workgroup initiatives for poison treatment protocols.
Labs/Teams: Directs biomarker core facility and leads translational research teams investigating kidney disease-drug interactions. Key focus areas include CKD-EPI equation applications, racial disparities in drug trials, and PBPK modeling for dosing optimization.
