Sankar Dass Navaneethan is the Garabed Eknoyan MD Endowed Professor in Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine, serving as Associate Chief of Nephrology, Director of Clinical Research for the Section of Nephrology, and Chief of the Renal Section at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. He holds academic appointments in Medicine-Nephrology at Baylor and leads clinical research initiatives in kidney disease.
Education includes an MBBS from Madras Medical College (2000), MPH from University of South Carolina (2002), and MS from Case Western Reserve University (2014). His research focuses on obesity's impact on CKD, cardiovascular complications in kidney disease, and leveraging electronic health records for CKD management. He also explores diabetes-CKD interactions and health services research in nephrology.
Navaneethan chairs NIH study sections and leads national guideline development initiatives, including KDIGO and KDOQI workgroups. His grants include VA HSRD funding for optimizing Renin-Angiotensin System blocker use in veterans with kidney disease (1I01HX002917-01A1), NIH NHLBI support for studying visceral adiposity and fitness in CKD (R01DK101500), and NIH mentorship grants for CV outcomes research in CKD (K24HL161414).
He serves as Associate Editor for American Journal of Kidney Diseases and Section Editor for Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension.
