Thomas Bourgeron is a researcher at the Neuroscience Department of the Pasteur Institute, where he has served as Director of the Unit on Human Genetics and Cognitive Functions since 2008. Elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 2014, he pioneered the identification of single-gene mutations (NLGN3, NLGN4X, SHANK3) linked to autism, reshaping the field by emphasizing rare genetic variants converging on synaptic dysfunction. His work bridges whole genome sequencing, brain imaging, stem cell models, and clinical evaluations.
- Director, Human Genetics and Cognitive Functions Unit (2008–present)
- Group Leader at Pasteur Institute (2003–2008)
- Assistant Professor at Pasteur Institute (1995–1999)
Research focuses on neurogenetics, autism spectrum disorders, and synaptic function, with clinical collaborations like the EU-AIMS project. His articles span Neuroscience, Genetics, and Behavioural Biology, addressing synaptic defects, genetic models, and neurodevelopmental mechanisms.
Scientific Awards:
- IPSEN Prize for Neuronal Plasticity (2015)
- Chair of excellence (Bettencourt-Schueller/FondaMental, 2012)
- EMBO Member (2008)
- Vallery Radot Award (2008)
- Lacassagne Award (2007)
- Jean Bernard Award (2007)
- French Academy of Sciences Biological Discoveries Award (2007)
- ENI Young Investigator (2005)
