Thomas Bartlett is a Lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University, part of the School of Humanities and Sciences. He has taught classical and modern Chinese at prestigious institutions including Yale, Cambridge, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, and held leadership roles such as Director of Harvard's Chinese Language Program and Director of Johns Hopkins' Language Teaching Center. His academic journey includes a BA in Classics (Harvard, 1961), MA in Ancient Chinese History (National Taiwan, 1972), and PhD in Premodern Chinese History (Princeton, 1985).

His research focuses on China Linguistics, premodern Chinese history, and the conceptualization of 'Zhongguo' (Centralia). He advocates for critical analysis of classical texts' authenticity. In 2018, he reviewed Ian Johnston's translations of Gu Yanwu's works in Dao. He has also served as an interpreter for U.S. corporations and Australian academic delegations in China.
Awards include finalist status in the 1978 U.S. State Department Mandarin interpreter search and a U.S. Foreign Service Institute proficiency grade 4 (1989). He declined a 1987 Mellon Fellowship due to institutional affirmative action policies.
At Stanford since 2011, he teaches classical Chinese texts, emphasizing early philosophical and historical readings. He also served as Visiting Professor at National Tsing Hua University (2013) and contributed to language programs globally.
