Shin-yi Chao is an Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester's Department of Religion and Classics within the School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a PhD in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia (2004) and MA degrees from UCLA and National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan). Her research focuses on Chinese popular religion, Daoism, and ritual studies, combining interdisciplinary approaches that integrate textual analysis with ethnographic fieldwork.

Her research examines religious practices such as Zhenwu worship in imperial China, spirit mediums in Taiwan, and female monastic roles in Daoism. Current projects include religious revival in rural northern China and religion's role in Taiwanese identity. She teaches courses on Chinese religions, new religious movements, and death/dying studies.
