Thomas Mullaney is a Professor of History at Stanford University and holds a courtesy appointment in East Asian Languages and Cultures. He directs graduate studies in the History Department and serves as the Kluge Chair in Technology and Society at the Library of Congress. His research focuses on East Asian technological history, transnational networks, and linguistic modernization. Mullaney earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University (2006), M.A. from Johns Hopkins University (2000), and B.A. from Johns Hopkins (1999).
His major works include The Chinese Typewriter (Fairbank Prize winner), Your Computer Is on Fire, and the forthcoming The Chinese Computer. His research explores the intersection of technology, language, and empire, with a focus on Chinese-language computing history. His articles appear in Journal of Asian Studies, Technology & Culture, and Aeon.
Mullaney has curated exhibitions like Radical Machines: Chinese in the Information Age and delivered keynote addresses globally. His accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Fairbank Prize. He actively engages in digital humanities initiatives, including the DHAsia program at Stanford.
