Eugenia Y. Lean is Professor of Chinese History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University, where she also serves as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute. She holds a BA from Stanford University (1990) and MA/PhD from UCLA (1996/2001). Prior to Columbia, she taught at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Her research examines modern Chinese history through interdisciplinary lenses including history of science and technology, gender studies, affect theory, consumer culture, mass media, law, and urban society. She pioneered the concept of 'vernacular industrialism' to analyze local innovation in China's industrialization. Her current project investigates China's role in shaping global intellectual property regimes and cultures of copying.
Professor Lean's publications consistently explore intersections of science, capitalism, and culture in modern China. Her work demonstrates particular focus on industrial innovation, gender politics of production, and transnational knowledge exchange. Recent articles examine topics ranging from trademark disputes to cosmetics manufacturing through frameworks of cultural entrepreneurship and material culture.
