Thijs Witty serves as an Assistant Professor at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS), Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University. He teaches in the Film and Literary Studies program and is affiliated with the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA), where he instructs the Creative Strategies Minor. Additionally, he holds a position at the Master Education in the Arts program at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.
His academic qualifications include:
- PhD in Cultural Analysis from the University of Amsterdam (2019)
- NT2 certificate (teacher Dutch as a second language) (2021)
Witty's primary scholarly focus centers on literary essayism, investigating how this form distinguishes itself through its unique capacity for measurement of human experiences that resist quantification, such as trauma or sublime moments. His research extends to film essayism and its connection with popular education, particularly examining Third and Fourth Cinema alongside pedagogies of co-learning and horizontality. Current projects include 'The Essay in the Academy,' exploring the relationship between essay form and disciplinary knowledge in universities, and 'Unadaptable Screenplays,' which analyzes early Hollywood screenplays by women writers like Alice Guy, Lillian J. Sweetser, Thea von Harbou, Frances Marion, and Frederica Sagor Maas.
His scholarly work has been supported by the ASCA PhD Fellowship (2013-2017).
Witty has supervised thesis projects for DAS Choreography at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam and the Master Artistic Research program at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. His teaching portfolio encompasses undergraduate and graduate courses including Film and Literary Studies (BA), Media Studies (MA), and Film and Photographic Studies (MA).
