Mieke Bal is a Dutch cultural theorist, video artist, and former professor of Literary Theory at the University of Amsterdam, where she co-founded the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). She holds a M.A. in French (1969) and a Ph.D. in French and Comparative Literature (1977) from Utrecht University. Previously, she was Professor of Semiotics and Women’s Studies at Utrecht University and Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Rochester, where she co-founded the first program in visual culture. Bal’s research spans biblical antiquity, art history, feminism, migratory culture, and interdisciplinary cultural analysis.
Her notable works include Travelling Concepts in the Humanities (2002), Narratology (2017), and a political art trilogy. She received the 2005 Academy Professorship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences for her innovative work in literary theory and visual arts. Bal’s artistic contributions, such as video installations like Don Quijote: Sad Countenances (2019) and essay films like It’s About Time! (2020), further bridge academic and creative realms. She serves on editorial boards, including Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society.
