Jan Frederik Verwoert is a Professor of Art and Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts within the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. He concurrently teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and de Appel's curatorial program in Amsterdam. His research critically examines the intersections of feeling, movement, intuition, and perception within contemporary art and cultural theory, challenging systems of self-imposed performative pressure in creative and academic contexts.
Verwoert’s work manifests through writing, curatorial projects, and pedagogical experimentation. Key publications include monographs on Bas Jan Ader and essay collections exploring art’s role in societal discourse. His recent research (2019–2022) focuses on embodied knowledge, decolonial pedagogy, and anti-capitalist art practices, evidenced in collaborative exhibitions and lecture series.
As a contributing editor for frieze, his critiques appear in journals and anthologies worldwide. His academic activities include curating research dialogues like #Many souls Speak Through Bodies in Motion (2022) and lecturing on topics such as Unlearning Proprietary Methods of (Kn)ow(n)ing Thyself (2021).
