Erik Viskil serves as academic director of the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) and Professor of Research and Discourse in Artistic Practice at Leiden University.
His educational background includes:
- Museology studies at Leiden University
- Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory, and Rhetoric at the University of Amsterdam
- PhD awarded in 1994 for research on the theory of definition
Viskil's research explores the intersection of artistic practice and discourse, with emphasis on writing as a medium in visual arts. His work spans film programmes, lecture series, and seminars addressing themes including political violence depiction, the camera as instrument of thought, and film essays as auto-ethnographic research tools. This interdisciplinary approach integrates museology, argumentation theory, and rhetoric.
As an academic leader, he founded the Writing | Image & Language department at Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2002) and served as executive board member/director of education at Rietveld Academy while chairing Design Academy Eindhoven's examination board.
His current PhD supervision includes:

Viskil maintains extensive collaborations with cultural institutions including Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Sandberg Instituut, Stedelijk Museum, De Appel, Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, NWO, and Dutch government bodies (Amsterdam City Council, Ministry of Education).
