Thierry Gervais

Dr. Thierry Gervais is a Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, serving as the Director of the Film and Photography Preservation and Collections Management (F+PPCM) MA program and Head of Research at The Image Centre (IMC). His work centers on the history of photography, photojournalism, and the intersection of artificial intelligence with photographic practices.

He has curated and co-curated major exhibitions, including Dispatch: War Photographs in Print, 1854–2008 and Léon Gimpel (1873–1948), The Audacious Work of a Photographer, and organized symposia such as Photography: the Black Box of History and Encoding the Image: How does AI affect the Future of Photo History.

He co-edited The Making of Visual News: A History of Photography in the Press (Bloomsbury, 2017) and Facing Black Star (IMC Books, 2023), and previously edited the journal Études photographiques from 2007 to 2013. His research examines retouched press photographs and the impact of AI on photographic historiography.
