Marty Gervais is a Professor and resident writing professional at the University of Windsor's English Department within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He specializes in creative writing, publishing, and local history. Gervais teaches courses such as the Editing and Publishing Practicum, guiding students through book production processes. He is also the founder of Black Moss Press and has served as Windsor’s Poet Laureate since 2011. His work frequently explores Windsor’s cultural heritage, blending historical narratives with contemporary creative practices.
Notable publications include Ghost Road and Other Forgotten Stories of Windsor (2012), The Rumrunners (2008), and Five Days Walking Five Towns (2017), which delve into local history and folklore. Gervais has received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) for his contributions to Canadian culture. His courses and practicum projects have produced over 30 published works in collaboration with students, focusing on community storytelling and multiculturalism. Beyond academia, he organizes literary events, mentors emerging writers, and contributes to cultural initiatives in Windsor.
