Rory Waterman is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Modern & Contemporary Literature at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) since 2012. He leads the AHRC-funded project Lincolnshire Folk Tales: Origins, Legacies, Connections, Futures (2024-2025) and co-led the Poets Respond to Covid-19 initiative (2020-2021).

His research interests span creative writing, contemporary poetry, folklore, travel literature, and regional identity, with a focus on Lincolnshire, the Midlands, and Northern regions. His critical work explores class dynamics, war and conflict, censorship, and poetic form.
Waterman’s recent publications reflect themes of poetic response to global crises, literary analysis of 20th/21st-century poets, and folklore’s cultural legacy. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes on topics ranging from Philip Larkin’s parodic influence to Charles Causley’s maritime themes.

He supervises PhD projects on diverse topics including disabled representation in children’s fiction, post-industrial landscapes in poetry, and hip hop intertextuality. Waterman co-edits New Walk Editions and founded the Nottingham Creative Writing Hub, fostering collaborations with UNESCO Cities of Literature and international arts organizations.
