Dr. Jane Tormey is an Honorary Fellow at the School of Design and Creative Arts, affiliated with the University home Schools. Her research focuses on the intersections of art practice, political content, and aesthetics, particularly through photography and film. She has authored key texts such as Photography and Political Aesthetics (2023) and edited seminal works like The Routledge Companion to Photography Theory (2019). Her work bridges art theory with interdisciplinary dialogue, exploring how visual mediums engage with political and social issues.
Her publications include analyses of photographic realism (Photographic Realism: late twentieth century aesthetics, 2013) and the role of cities in photographic representation (Cities and Photography, 2012). She co-edits the Bloomsbury book series RadicalAesthetics-RadicalArt, emphasizing avant-garde approaches to art and politics. Tormey’s scholarship is characterized by rigorous critique of aesthetic frameworks and their socio-political implications.
