Therese Tardio is a Teaching Professor of Hispanic Studies at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics, part of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She joined the department in 2001 and currently serves as Director of Undergraduate Strategic Initiatives. Her work focuses on creating critical, analytical learning environments and fostering intercultural understanding through education.
Dr. Tardio holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures and Languages from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.A. in Comparative Area Studies from Duke University. Her research explores Central American contemporary cultural production, U.S.-Mexico borderlands studies, and decolonial frameworks, informed by feminist and visual studies.
Her teaching contributions include co-authoring Elementary Spanish I & II Online, an open-access digital curriculum for hybrid/remote learning. She oversees study abroad programs in Seville, Madrid, and Monteverde, Costa Rica, and advises the Hispanic Studies minor. Her awards include the Carnegie Mellon Advising Award and Jefferson Award for Public Service.
Tardio’s publications bridge pedagogy and cultural analysis, emphasizing digital innovation and community engagement. She actively participates in initiatives like the Civic Engagement Network and Core Competency Working Group on Intercultural Learning.
