Theresa M. Curtis serves as a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences within SUNY Cortland's College of Arts and Sciences. Her office is located in Bowers Hall, Room 1318, with laboratory facilities in Room 1319.
Dr. Curtis holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Ph.D. in Physiology and Cell Biology from Albany Medical College. Her professional experience includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Virginia School of Medicine and roles as Staff and Senior Scientist at Agave BioSystems Inc.
Her research focuses on developing cellular-based biosensors for environmental chemical threat detection. She investigates vertebrate cell sensitivity to toxicants and longevity in portable sensor platforms, with future work targeting field-deployable organ-on-a-chip systems for environmental monitoring. Dr. Curtis teaches Human Physiology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Biomedical Sciences Seminar.
Her laboratory work addresses growing needs in protecting water and food supplies from chemical exposure through broad-spectrum detection systems that can identify unknown chemicals or mixtures where traditional analyte-specific tests would fail.
