Christa Chatfield serves as a Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at State University of New York at Cortland. Her office is located in Bowers Hall, Room 1204, with her laboratory situated in Bowers Hall, Room 1205. She can be contacted at 607-753-2235 or via email at christa.chatfield@cortland.edu.
Dr. Chatfield received her B.S. from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. She teaches courses in Microbiology and Microbiology and Human Disease, bringing her research expertise into the classroom.
Her primary research focuses on Legionella pneumophila, the bacterial agent of Legionnaires' Disease. Specifically, she investigates how this pathogen colonizes water delivery systems (shower heads, produce sprayers, hot tubs) through biofilm interactions with other organisms in freshwater environments. This research aims to develop improved methods for removing these dangerous bacteria from water systems.
Her work has significant public health implications as Legionnaires' Disease can cause serious, often deadly pneumonia, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. While her publication list is referenced, specific articles weren't detailed in the available information.
