Rozanne Brooks was a distinguished Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at SUNY Cortland from 1956 until her retirement in 1992. She held roles as founding Chair of the Sociology Department (1956–1973) and Coordinating Chair of Social Sciences (1964–1968). A pioneer in integrating anthropology into the department’s curriculum, her research focused on fashion’s relationship to social change, women’s societal roles, and demographic studies of 'never married' individuals. Her work earned five grants/fellowships from the SUNY Research Foundation and culminated in her 1976 designation as a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor.
Brooks emphasized hands-on pedagogy and mentorship, advocating for educators to remain connected to students beyond classrooms. Her legacy includes the Rozanne Brooks Museum, established in 2001 using her ethnographic collection, and the annual Rozanne Brooks Dedicated Teacher’s Award, rewarding faculty dedicated to student-centric teaching and institutional engagement.
She held advanced degrees: BA in Journalism (Pennsylvania State University), MA in Sociology (University of Missouri), and PhD in Sociology (Pennsylvania State University). Post-retirement, she was named Distinguished Teaching Professor Emerita. Awards also include SUNY Faculty Senate’s Distinguished University Faculty Senator Emerita title.
