Theresa Kuchler is a Professor of Finance at New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, where she also serves as the John L. Vogelstein Fellow in Finance and Director of the Glucksman Institute for Research in Securities Markets. Her research focuses on household finance, behavioral economics, and real estate finance, with a strong emphasis on leveraging large datasets to analyze social networks, biodiversity risk, and economic expectations. Kuchler holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University and a diploma in Business Economics from the University of Mannheim. She has held visiting research positions at UC Berkeley and is affiliated with NBER, CEPR, and CESifo.
Her work explores how social networks shape economic decisions, such as housing investments and pandemic-era social distancing, and investigates the intersection of biodiversity loss with economic outcomes. Notable contributions include studies on cross-gender social ties, migrant integration in Germany, and the impact of automation on racial disparities in small-business lending. Kuchler has received prestigious awards for her research on biodiversity risk and frequently publishes in top journals like Nature, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Financial Studies.
Academically, she teaches courses on household finance and supervises PhD students in empirical household finance. Her research also extends to climate finance, economic mobility, and the role of social capital in fostering equitable outcomes.
