Thanos Dimitrios is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He concurrently serves as Director of Basic Research and Chairman of the Scientific Board at the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens (since 2006), and previously led the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Al. Fleming (2003–2006). His career includes tenured roles as Associate (2000–2003) and Assistant Professor (1995–2000) at Columbia.
Education highlights include a PhD from the University of Crete (1983–1988) under Prof. J. Papamatheakis, postdoctoral training at Harvard University (1989–1994) with Dr. Tom Maniatis, and early research in developmental biology at the University of Athens (1981–1983).
Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of gene regulation, including enhancer/promoter dynamics, transcription factor networks, and epigenetic modifications. His work bridges basic science and translational medicine, with contributions to understanding interferon signaling and immune-related gene expression.
Honors include EMBO membership (2004), Pew Scholars Award (1996–2001), and Greece’s Excellence Science Award (2012). He actively serves on EU research infrastructure committees, ERC panels, and review boards for institutions like the Max Delbrück Center.
Leadership roles include steering committees for Systems Biology initiatives and international advisory boards. Current research emphasizes systems-level analysis of gene regulatory networks and chromatin dynamics in health and disease.
