He currently serves as the Director of Basic Research and Chairman of the Scientific Board at the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens, Greece, while also holding an Adjunct Professor position at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. His career spans over three decades of groundbreaking research in gene regulation and molecular biology.
Education:
- B.S. in Biological Sciences (1983), University of Athens
- M.S. in Molecular Biology (1985), University of Crete
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (1988), University of Crete
Research Focus: Thanos has pioneered the study of enhanceosomes—three-dimensional complexes of transcription factors and enhancer DNA—and their role in gene transcription. His work extends to chromatin dynamics, epigenetics, and stochastic gene expression in immune cell populations.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Irma T. Hirschl Career Scientist Award (1996-2001)
- Pew Scholars Award in Biomedical Sciences (1996-2001)
- European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Elect Member (2004)
