Thaddeus Stappenbeck is a Professor and Chair of Inflammation & Immunity at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, holding a Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study. His research focuses on understanding how genetic and environmental factors influence intestinal epithelial cell functions in inflammation, repair, and microbiome interactions. He earned his B.A. from Northwestern University’s Integrated Science Program, followed by an M.D./Ph.D. from Northwestern University Medical School. His training includes anatomic pathology at Washington University School of Medicine and postdoctoral work on host-microbial interactions under Jeffrey Gordon.
Research interests include inflammation, infection, wound repair, and host defense mechanisms in intestinal tissues. Key achievements include discoveries in colonic stem cell regeneration, microbiome metabolite roles in repair, and gene-environment interactions in Crohn’s disease.
